Education Japan Scholarships

Note: All scholarships for 2003 already awarded.

Criteria for awarding scholarships

The scholarships are intended to help those that would otherwise have difficulty in covering all expenses for study in Japan, but are outstanding students and clearly deserve the chance to improve their Japanese language skills. The application process is rigorous, and you will need to provide proof of academic ability and commitment to the language. Education Japan does not however act as your guarantor - you need to fulfil the requirements for the relevant visa. The scholarships are for both long and short term students who apply for a language course at a Japanese Language School in Japan.

Requirements

  • Application form completed in English or Japanese with passport photo attached [PDF FORM]
  • Sealed references from two academic referees which include the following cover form, one of whom is cognizant of your Japanese studies [PDF FORM]
  • Sealed academic transcript from your university or school
  • Cover letter in Japanese explaining why you are applying for the scholarship, your reasons for studying Japanese and your intentions after the course (ie what you will do with your improved Japanese skills)

In all cases, please be honest - don't write what you think we want to hear, write what you want to tell us. Do not get a friend to write the cover letter for you - write it yourself, even if your Japanese is basic.

The scholarships are for those who have some experience of studying Japanese in their home country - complete beginners are not eligible. This is because we need to see some proof of your commitment to learning the language.
